An opportunity to spend some quality Mummy/Son time, thanks to Hillside Caravan Park and their Megapod…

Ever since Sienna was born, there has been a little part of me that missed my time just with Lucas. His little sister completed our family but I think it’s important each child gets their one to one time. With Lucas at school Monday to Friday, Sienna gets plenty of that with Mummy but Lucas not so much.

Mummy and Lucas in the car

Lucas and I set off on the hour journey to Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Ready for a night in a MegaPod at Hillside Caravan Park (HCP). He’s been asking to go camping for ages but, if I’m completely honest, I’m not the camping type! I like my luxuries and a camping pod is as much as I’ve been able to stand in the past. Since visiting HCP I’ve now got a new taste for glamping and if it’s not a Mega (or Deluxe) Pod, then I’m not going!

I took over the Hillside Instagram account and said

“If it was just me, no husband or kids, I could totally live in one of these!”

Each MegaPod consists of:

  • A kitchenette area – equipped with sink, microwave, fridge, kettle and food preparation area.
  • A dining area – a table with two chairs and two extra folding chairs if needed.
  • A sleeping area – a fixed double bed
  • A lounge area – with an L shape sofa bed facing a mounted flat screen TV.
  • A wet room – including a toilet, basin and shower.
  • Electric sockets
  • Raised decking
  • Your own picnic table & bench
  • Electric heating

First Impressions

As we let ourselves into the pod, we were amazed. They had kindly hung some fairy lights up and left a couple of mugs with Galaxy hot chocolate. It was a lovely extra touch that I really appreciated! Lucas was literally bouncing around our home for the night with excitement! Pat, one of the owners, visited us at our cabin and went through all the little added details. As with camping/glamping, you have to take some of your own things (duvet, sheets and towels). If you forget anything, HCP have anything you might need including cutlery/crockery set, towels or a BBQ. They also have a shop in the reception so if you forget any food, toiletries etc, it’s all there.Nothing can stop you enjoying your stay.

Customer Service

The people who run Hillside Caravan Park are lovely. From Kieran, who I chatted to on their social media, to the owners Pat and Chris. Everyone was super friendly, helpful and genuinely just happy to chat and get to know their customers. For me, this is key. I think you’re more likely to go back if you form a connection with the people there.

The Site and Facilities

I was also struck by how well maintained and clean everything was. Once Lucas and I had unpacked, we took his scooter for a look around the site. It’s tidy. I didn’t see a speck of litter and the washrooms – wow! Fresh, bright, clean AND I was amazed to see a bath in one of them! Obviously within the MegaPod’s you have your own en suite which is great! However, if there are four of you in your Pod, a couple of you might want to use the washrooms.

One of the biggest inconveniences about camping for me is that you have to trek to go to the toilet. This could be TMI but I have a wee as soon as I get up on a morning. After two kids, sometimes in the night too! Having the en suite was AMAZING. It meant there was less messing about with Lucas, getting him sorted for bed and ready in the morning.

The site has a pond and a playground with space for the kids to run around and ride bikes/scooters. Great for burning off some energy! For the adults, there is a coffee lounge with squashy leather sofas, a tv and an amazing coffee machine. Pat told me that it was important they had a machine with real milk in the old cow shed! I’m not a coffee drinker but I can imagine it makes all the difference. They have a massive amount of land available and supply you with a map to explore. The surroundings are truly stunning and we were luckily enough to visit on a cold but bright and sunny Saturday. The blue skies over the hills of the North Yorkshire countryside were relaxing and pretty. Despite Lucas being on fast forward with his excitement, I found myself calm. I put that down to my beautiful surroundings.

Mummy/Son Dinner Date

Lucas and I drove five minutes to the nearby village of Knayton. The lovely traditional Dog and Gun pub is also walking distance if you fancy a pint or two. Importantly, they only serve food at certain times. Definitely check before you go and book if you can. Luckily, they managed to fit us in as we got there early. However, it does get busy. To be honest, I can see why – lovely surroundings, delicious food and super friendly staff. Our little Mummy/son date really enjoyable. I took a colouring book and Uno to entertain us. Lucas said that his meal was “the best meal ever”. High praise.

The Evening

We headed back to our MegaPod about 6:15pm and immediately got cosy in our onesies. I’d brought some sweets/marshmallows as a treat so I made up the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Kieran had kindly left us. We played with Lucas’ Orchard Toys games while we drank them. It was nice to be able to give him my full attention. Lucas got to stay up to half eight. As a result he was knackered! We could have pulled the sofa bed out so we could have slept separately but I wanted to stay up a bit. We never co-sleep so it was a lovely treat. He was out like a light, I guess all the fresh air and excitement knocked him out.

Local Attractions

Everything about our MegaPod was homely, comfortable and cosy. One night wasn’t enough for us.I wished we were staying longer but we had to get back to Daddy and Sienna. Lucas was insistent that we go back and take them with us next time and I have to say…I think he’s right, maybe we’ll try the DELUXE MEGAPOD next time….yep, I said Deluxe! We will definitely be heading back to Hillside Caravan Park in the future. It’s conveniently near to Lightwater Valley, Flamingo Land, Monk Park Farm and a Falconry Centre. We’d like to go for a long weekend and visit attractions in the area too. I’d also like to explore more of the actual site and surroundings itself.

  1. Sounds amazing! Glamping is on my to-do list for this year and these look awesome! Husband wanted to go up to York so maybe this place might be a good option. WIll have to research a bit on Google Maps 🙂

  2. This getaway sounds like absolute perfection! You are right, one on one time with each child is important and it will always mean so much to them. This sounds like a great way to spend that time as it is not distracting and is a great way to have quality time.

Thank you for participating in #KCACOLS!
